When a magazine’s website disappears overnight

Asian Geographic is a household name in the region — a magazine covering culture, nature and exploration across Asia since 1999. One day, its website — the hub for stories, subscriptions and its photo competition — started serving nothing but error pages. Every page, gone.

The rescue, step by step

1. Deep diagnosis. No guessing. I went straight into the server error logs and traced the failure to its source instead of poking at symptoms.

2. Database surgery. The database was corrupted — the actual cause of the wall of 404s. I repaired it manually through phpMyAdmin, table by table, verifying integrity as I went.

3. Visual restoration. With the data back, broken styles and scripts still made the site look wrong. Regenerating the CSS and JS through Elementor restored the layout to its exact original state.
